An Algerian Techno-Ritual offers a methodology whereby machine learning (ML) can be used as a tool to document cultural practices that are at risk of being permanently erased from our collective memory as well as a way for people to connect to their heritage.
I am using AI to artistically respond to and connect with a disappearing practice from my own culture: the facial tattoos of Algerian women.
I made a database of mock markings, generated an AI version of the markings, then used augmented reality (AR) to overlay it on my face. Demo:
My intention is to expand this pilot to produce an database of facial markings of North African and Middle-Eastern women that does not contain biometric data, to be used for cultural and artistic purposes. I would like to develop a way of using AI that is non-extractive and that is truly beneficial to society.
